Colon's album El Malo has become known as one of the first albums to feature the "New York Sound" that sparked a renewed interest in Latin music during the 1970s. Colon has been instrumental in boosting the careers of Latin superstars Ruben Blades and Celia Cruz, as well as others. Willie is renowned for taking his concerts back to the classic New York Sound by infusing them with a lively spirit and . Willie Colon was born into a Puerto Rican household and grew up in a neighborhood of the Bronx which immersed him in the culture, arts, and difficulty inherent in Hispanic America during his youth. This environment shaped the powerful force he would become, not only in Latin American music but also as an activist for his community.
Willie released his debut album El Malo at just sixteen, setting him up with a reputation as somewhat of a bad boy. Fans have been interested in watching him mature and grow as an artist up to this day. Colon and other musicians (like the legendary Puerto Rican singer Hector Lavoe) worked together to create a distinctive rhythm-charged blend of traditional Cuban dance music with the American big band sound that continues to be a part of Willie Colon's music.
Throughout his career, Colon has woven political themes and messages into his music, a path that would eventually lead him to perform at the inauguration of President Bill Clinton in 1993. His work has netted him an impressive 11 Grammy nominations, with one win. Additionally, Colón has received a CHUBB fellowship from Yale University, the most prestigious award given by the Ivy League school.

Many were concerned when Willie and his wife Julia were in a serious car accident In April of 2021. Willie sustained multiple injuries, leaving many fans in fear that his touring days may be over.
